Pearl Mussel
Biological Name: Margaritifera margaritifera L.
Description:
The fresh water pearl mussel (Margaritifera margaritifera L.) is a bi-valve mollusc that lives in fast flowing, nutrient poor rivers with clean, sandy and stony bottoms. They may live up to 80 or 100 years.
Most people often mistakenly use the term clam when referring to a freshwater mussel. Freshwater mussels and clams are both bivalve mollusks, but they differ in important ways. Mussels make pearls, but clams do not. Freshwater mussels have parasitic young, but clams do not.
In china have two main species: Triangle-shell Pearl Mussel and Cockscomb Pearl Mussel. The first Chinese pearl mussel used in centuries-old pearl culturing, and has been exploited for them since remote antiquity times. And it’s also a delicious nutritious food with modern human.
Historical or traditional use:
- Deficient yin of the liver and kidneys and hyperactivity of liver yang manifested as headache, dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, irritability and insomnia.
- Deficient blood in the liver manifested as blurred vision and night blindness.
- Wind and heat in the liver meridian manifested as red, swollen and painful eyes and photophobia.
Active constituents:
The Pearl Mussel Extract contains a rich blend of natural proteins, mucopolysaccharides, minerals and Omega-3 fatty acids, such as Eicosapentaenoic Acid (EPA), Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) and a lesser-known fatty acid, Eicosatetraenoic Acid (ETA). These naturally occurring products are increasingly being recognised to substantially help maintain joint mobility, good health and well being.
Hyaluronic Acid (Hyaluronan): The recent researched to make show that the Pearl mussel extract comprised a higher concentration Hyaluronic Acid and content is near 20%. It’s a linear polysaccharide composed of repeating disaccharide units of N-acetyl-glucosamine and D-glucuronic acid. The uronic acid and the amino sugar are linked together by alternating beta-1,4 and beta-1,3 glycosidic bonds.
Hyaluronic Acid is ubiquitous in the organism where it plays important biological roles. The highest concentration is found in the soft connective tissue where it is a major component of the extracellular matrix, and in the vitreous body of the eye. Hyaluronic Acid is present in hyaline cartilage, in synovial joint fluid, and in the skin tissue, both dermis and epidermis. It’s main consist in nacre of Pearl Mussel.
The study of the physiological role of Hyaluronic Acid in humans has led us to develop specific proprietary products, based on different molecular weight polysaccharides, free of any inflammatory fractions, for use in orthopaedics, rheumatology, ophthalmology and dermatology.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids: The group of Omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial to relieve symptoms and improve lung function in people with asthma.
Asthma is caused in part by inflammation of the air-ways, and some compounds that have anti-inflammatory activity are effective against asthma. ETA is a more potent anti-inflammatory compound than EPA and DHA, the fatty acids present in cod-liver oil and other fish-oil supplements. In the new study, people receiving the mussel extract had a reduction in the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in their expired breath, indicating a decrease in the severity of airway inflammation.
Because of its anti-inflammatory effect, the pearl mussel extracts have also been used successfully to treat rheumatoid arthritis, although not all studies have found this treatment to be beneficial.
